A woman (55) from Turin, Italy, quietly and secretly traveled to Switzerland. Not to go on holiday, but to die. She didn’t tell anyone about it.
Almost an hour before her death, she wrote a strange text message to her lawyer. “Go home, turn off the electricity and water, donate my clothes to charity and entrust the urn containing our son’s ashes to my husband.”
It was immediately clear to the lawyer: it was serious. She responded immediately, informed the man and reported the woman missing to the police. But by then it was too late: the woman was dead.
“We only receive her ashes”
It was only a few days later that the man discovered what had happened to his wife. The hospital in Switzerland had sent an email with all the necessary information. But the message ended up in the spam folder.
This all happened in October last year, but the case is only now making headlines in Italy. The man is not only sad, but also angry with the hospital. He was not told in time to stop his wife. “Nobody informed us about my wife’s trip to Switzerland,” he tells “La Stampa”. So he didn’t even get to say goodbye to her properly. “We only received her ashes.”
The family was able to stop the first suicide attempt
After the serious illness and subsequent death of her son in January 2023, the Italian suffered from depression. In July 2023 he wanted to commit suicide and went to a hospital in Basel to do so.
At that moment, the family was able to stop her and change her mind. They had hoped that she would be feeling better by now. The man suspects that his wife was not properly assessed before her euthanasia wish was granted.
However, Turin city councilor Silvio Viale defends the hospital’s actions. “I am sure that the Swiss clinic has carried out all necessary health examinations.”
He respected the woman’s decision and was happy that the clinic granted her a dignified death. Euthanasia is prohibited in Italy. The topic always leads to heated debates. (ymh)
