After more than two years of roadblocks with the help of glued activists, the German climate protection group ‘Last Generation’ wants to do without them in the future. “From now on we will protest in a different form – but it will remain unavoidable. From March we will call for disobedient gatherings across the country,” the group announced in Berlin on Monday. And further: “Instead of dividing into small groups and blocking streets, we will hold disobedient meetings together with many people.” This ends the “chapter of holdings and roadblocks.”
In addition, they want to “more directly confront those responsible for climate destruction in the future” and “confront politicians and other decision makers publicly and on camera,” the report said. “On the other hand, we will increasingly visit places where fossils are being destroyed for our protest, as has been the case in the past during protests at oil pipelines, airports or the RWE industrial estate.”
Gluing it down was the right way to do it
In their statement, the activists draw parallels between their protest and other major movements of the past: “Whether we look at the fight for women’s rights, the end of segregation or the fight for labor rights, it is about a shift towards a fairer and more humane society “Historically, sustained protest has always been indispensable, along with other forms of participation in our democracy.”
✊ Disobedient meetings instead of holdings and roadblocks.
✈️ Protests in places of destruction, direct confrontation with politicians.
🤝 We are changing our form of protest and demand – are you with us now?

In order to draw attention to our own concerns – the consequences of man-made climate change – sticking to this strategy was the right way to go. This meant that you ‘couldn’t just be pulled off the street’. Since then, the number of demonstrators has increased a hundredfold.
On January 24, 2022, the group began roadblocks due to radical climate change. There were also protests in museums, stadiums and ministries. The Berlin police alone carried out 550 actions last year and the capital’s public prosecutor’s office has now handled 3,700 cases. Many of those affected were outraged by the activists, and even Green Party politicians saw their actions as counterproductive. But it has been noticeably quieter around the ‘Last Generation’ for a while now. It is in the shadow of the loud farmers’ protests and now also the large demonstrations against right-wing extremism. She canceled her next planned ‘mass blockade’ on February 3 in favor of an action against the right. (lak/t-online)
