The revolt of US governors reveals the US president’s greatest weakness: that’s why Biden trips over barbed wire

When it comes to migration, Joe Biden must take tougher action. Otherwise he will lose even more support.

Can we still remember why Donald Trump (77) won the 2016 election? Exactly, he didn’t say much more than: ‘We are going to build a big wall.’ And Trump kept his word. As soon as he took office, he set up the excavators on the southern border, which actually led to a massive reduction in migration movements.

During the pandemic, migration took a back seat, causing Trump to lose an important issue and Joe Biden (81) to be elected president of the US in 2020 thanks to other election promises. His policy was quite successful until recently. Since the dispute over the barbed wire in Texas, which Biden wants to remove against the wishes of the local government, Trump has every reason to rub his hands.

What did Biden do right? Under Biden, the US brought back the old European friends that Trump rejected and with whom he is fighting against Ukrainian aggressor Russia. Biden also achieved success in domestic policy – partly thanks to the end of the corona pandemic. This includes reducing unemployment, strengthening the healthcare system and promoting climate protection.

Illegal immigration at record levels

However, something went wrong during the migration. The Democrats seemed mainly interested in reversing all of Donald Trump’s measures in principle and covering his tracks. Biden not only stopped construction of the wall, but also sold the building materials intended for further construction.

On the first day of Biden’s term in office, illegal migration had surged again. During his three years as president, a total of probably six million people have crossed the border illegally – almost twice as many as before the pandemic. In recent weeks, there have been approximately 10,000 illegal border crossings from Mexico every day. Because migration has eluded Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris (59), who is responsible for it, it is once again issue number one in the current election campaign.

Rebellion of the Governors

It may be his humane touch that prompted Biden to order the removal of the razor wire installed by the Texas government to prevent illegal migration. But anyone who decides this way is committing political suicide in the US. According to the latest CBS survey, only 30 percent of the population supports Biden’s migration policy; when he took office it was more than 45 percent.

At the same time, support for Texas Governor Greg Abbott (66) is increasing: 25 out of 26 Republican colleagues across the country support him and his hard migration policy.

The Americans are back where they were eight years ago. The difference: instead of a wall, it is now a razor-sharp border fence. We still know exactly who won the elections at the time. Has Biden forgotten? It is not too late for him to correct course towards public opinion on the most important issue of the election campaign.
