More than 30 years old: Deutsche Bahn is looking for IT specialists for old Windows

For many, the image of the 30-year-old Windows 3.11 operating system may bring back memories. What some may not know: Even today, some companies still rely on Windows 3.11. And this despite the fact that it was released in 1993 as an extension of Windows 3.1 – and the manufacturer has not supported the software since 2001.

But more than twenty years later, a personnel services provider is looking for an IT specialist for the age-old operating system for a customer, T-Online reports. According to the newspaper, this would be Deutsche Bahn or its cooperation partner Siemens.

This is evident, for example, from the workplace in Erlangen (D), one of the largest Siemens locations. According to the vacancy, knowledge of Siba (Siemens Railway Automation System), which Deutsche Bahn uses in its trains, would also be an advantage.

Some companies rely on old technology

The ad goes on to say that these are “cab displays” on high-speed and regional trains that “show the driver key technical data in real time.” Another requirement for potential applicants is knowledge of ‘imaging systems’ – and the associated responsibility for ‘high-quality imaging software whose interfaces with the vehicle control or vehicle control technology must function smoothly’.

Even though the vacancy is surprising: according to T-Online, other companies also rely on proven technology. In 2016, a Polish car repair shop became known that had been working with the C64 computer for more than twenty years. Paris Orly Airport also made headlines: in 2015, thousands of passengers were stuck because a computer running Windows 3.1 failed.
