Sexsomnia – this sleep disorder is real. Those affected have sex with someone or masturbate during their deep sleep phase – and usually cannot remember their actions the next morning.

This form of sleepwalking will be the focus of a trial before the regional court in Lübeck from Monday. And in rather dramatic form: a former public prosecutor of Lübeck has to answer, who is accused of possibly abusing his son while sleepwalking in March 2019. The Kiel Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against the 52-year-old for serious child sexual abuse.

Sleepwalking and abusing your own son?

The suspect himself reported the incident. He said he was a sleepwalker and that he didn’t remember it himself. An expert checked this and later confirmed that it was possible to perform sexual acts as a sleepwalker.

According to previous information from the Kiel Public Prosecutor’s Office, it is unlikely that the man will be convicted. The research has therefore been temporarily stopped. After several complaints from the child’s mother, it was checked whether the procedure was correct. A successful legal action at the Schleswig High Court (OLG) ultimately led to the public prosecutor’s office having to file charges in the case.

According to a report by Spiegel, the Higher Regional Court found the suspect’s explanation implausible. So there were enough indications that the ex-public prosecutor was only feigning sexsomnia.

The purpose of the procedure is now to clarify whether the man is guilty or not. A total of six days of hearings are scheduled for the trial at the Lübeck Regional Court until February 14.
