Suspected of murder: Fotis D. (left) is said to have murdered his wife Jennifer D.. His girlfriend Michelle T. (right) is said to have helped him.

The trial surrounding the murder of a mother of five children keeps America in suspense. Neither the body of victim Jennifer D.* has yet been found, nor is the alleged murderer on trial. Because the accused ex-husband Fotis D.* committed suicide.

Instead, prosecutors in Connecticut accuse his lover Michelle T.* of being an accomplice and helping to cover up the crime. Defense attorneys respond with the “Gone Girl” theory, according to which the victim is still alive and orchestrated everything.

“I’m sure she’s still alive.”

Jennifer D. disappeared without a trace in May 2019. Her remains were never found. Detectives from the New Canaan Police Department have now testified on the witness stand that Michelle T. tried to mislead police during interrogations.

The jury was shown a video of a police interview in which the Venezuelan-born woman testified: “I’m sure she’s alive and hiding somewhere. Fotis told me she has done this before after an argument with her parents. She changed her name and lived in hiding in Aspen for three years.” In another interrogation, when asked why Jennifer would abandon her children, the 49-year-old added: “As far as I know she suffers from borderline schizophrenia.”

Evidence thrown into multiple dumpsters

However, prosecutors say Fotis brutally attacked and murdered his ex-wife on the morning of May 24, 2019 – after taking their five children aged 8 to 13 to school. He then allegedly dumped the body in her pickup truck, which was found three miles from the home. According to the indictment, T. helped dispose of evidence of the violence in several dumpsters in Hartford. The jury was shown a blood-soaked shirt and bra that Jennifer allegedly wore on the day of her death.

Jon Schoenhorn, T.’s lawyer, has an alternative explanation for the evidence presented: Jennifer D. would have left it herself. As part of her plan to fake a murder of herself and thereby send her husband to prison as the murderer. Just like the woman did in the Hollywood movie ‘Gone Girl’. (ymh)
