The barbed wire on the border with Mexico can be removed. The US Supreme Court has approved the planned measure by the US administration of President Joe Biden (81). Legally this is a success, but politically the situation is getting worse for Biden.
The barbed wire fence was erected to prevent migrants from entering the US. U.S. Border Patrol had reported about 10,000 illegal border crossings from Mexico every day in recent weeks — nearly twice as many as before the coronavirus pandemic. Many of them are migrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Ecuador who come to the US via Mexico and want to build a better life there.
Trump promised to build a wall
Border policy is a particularly controversial topic in the US and is extremely politically sensitive for Biden. Opposition Republicans accuse the Democrat of allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners into the country unhindered and stoke fears of a rise in crime and drug problems.
The Biden administration and Texas Governor Greg Abbott (66), a supporter of former President Donald Trump (77), have long argued about securing the US-Mexico border. Abbott accuses the government in Washington of doing nothing to stop illegal border crossings. Trump had already made the construction of a border wall with Mexico a central campaign theme in the 2016 election campaign – and is now doing so again in view of his intended candidacy for the presidential elections in November.
Governor wants to install more barbed wire
Texas authorities had set up barbed wire barriers near the border town of Eagle Pass. In December, a federal appeals court banned federal Border Patrol agents from removing the razor wire unless there was an exception due to a medical emergency.
At the beginning of January, the Ministry of Justice asked the Supreme Court to lift the ban pending a ruling in the main case. The court has now granted the request. But it is unclear whether the barbed wire will really disappear so quickly. Because Abbott announced he would do even more to stop migration.
Biden should take tougher action against Texas
Abbott said on Fox News on Thursday: “Because the Biden administration has truly abdicated its responsibility to secure the border and enforce the laws, Texas is simply securing the border.” He released photos showing the Texas National Guard laying new razor wire along the river.
And his plan is gaining momentum. On Thursday, 25 Republican governors released a joint statement of solidarity. Meanwhile, Democrats are calling on Biden to take a tougher approach to Texas.
He probably won’t violate the Supreme Court’s ruling. In the end, only removal was allowed, but no concrete decision was made on the construction of new barriers. (ymh)
