Bomb attack and storming of a hotel in the Somali city of Kismayo
A car explodes at the entrance of a hotel in central Kismayo, Somalia. At least three people were killed and eight injured, according to Reuters news agency.
The car, loaded with explosives, rammed the hotel gate and exploded. After the explosion, three men stormed the Tawakal Hotel with gunfire. According to local authorities, three armed men are still in the hotel.
Somali extremist group Al-Shahaab claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorist group has ties to al-Qaeda and years ago also swore allegiance to the Islamic State.
In 2019, a similar attack on another hotel in Kismayo killed at least 26 people. Kismayo is located in the south of the country, about 500 kilometers from Mogadishu.
