A Swiss man (32), who works as a volunteer for a nature foundation in the Thai city of Chiang Mai, was seriously injured by an Asiatic black bear on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place when the man was feeding the animal on the foundation’s grounds. The Bangkok Post reports this. The bear bit and the volunteer panicked.
To free himself from the bite, the Swiss reportedly cut off his right arm with a knife, according to the report. Earlier, Stefan Claudio S.* had stretched his arm into the bear’s cage, and the animal bit and wouldn’t let go. Witnesses to the incident quickly arrived on the scene to provide first aid. The seriously injured man was then taken to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a private hospital in Chiang Mai’s Muang district for surgery.
The mangled lower part of his arm is said to have been recovered from the bear enclosure. According to reports, the vicious black bear had been under the trust’s care since 2013.
