Bernard De Narda, the mayor of the northern French municipality of Raillencourt-Sainte-Olle, has had enough. During a cold spell between January 17 and 21, his phone kept ringing. The reason: citizens of the community of 2,200 residents complained about the snow that had fallen. They only cared about four centimeters of fresh snow.
They took out their frustration on the mayor, French media reported. For example, in text messages they complained about municipal transport services. They would not properly carry out “their mission of snow removal and salting”.
The criticism is not unfounded. In northern France, many roads became slippery due to freezing rain. Moreover, on January 18, there were miles of traffic jams throughout the country.
‘Mayor cannot be held responsible for everything’
Apparently irritated, De Narda had snow banned in the community without further ado. “Article one: As of today, no snow may fall in the Raillencourt-Sainte-Olle area,” a decree stated a short time later.
However, this decision is not really meant seriously. Instead, he wanted to “silence intolerant people,” De Narda said. “The mayor cannot be held responsible for everything!”
“A little humor is good”
De Narda further explained that due to municipal finances, money could no longer flow to snow removal and salting. But the mayor does not see this as a problem. Instead, he appealed to the community to come to terms with the situation: “60 years ago there were no snow plows and people made appointments to go to work. We must learn to respect the seasons.”
Last but not least, De Narda explained that he would consider further regulations, for example a ban on rabbits and hornets. His motto: “A little humor is good!” (Mrs)
