Hundreds of thousands of people are currently demonstrating against rights in Germany. Some of them are calling for a ban on the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD). But the far-right party is not the only faction from which some Germans want to be banned from parliament.

In recent days, a petition calling for a ban on the eco-party Alliance 90/The Greens has made headlines. As of Tuesday afternoon, almost 200,000 people have already signed the petition online on the change.org platform. “We are convinced that this party seriously harms the interests of the people of Germany and our economy,” writes entrepreneur Ralph Kahlert, initiator of the petition. “Rapid loss of money, jobs and prosperity, as well as uncertain pensions, healthcare, taxes and social security funds will be the immediate consequence,” he said.

In fact, representatives in the German parliament are now dealing with the Green Party’s ban petition. If there are 50,000 signatures or more, the Bundestag’s petitions committee must deal with the matter in question according to law. In addition to representatives from other parties, there are also five Green politicians on the committee.

Therefore, the Greens cannot be banned

The chances of campaign success are manageable. Rather, it shows frustration with the work of the current traffic light government.

In order for a party to be banned in Germany, its party goals must conflict with the constitution. It must also threaten the basic democratic order. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, both factors cannot be proven for the Greens, writes the “Volksstimme”.

The AfD, on the other hand, is slightly closer to banning the party. In the eastern German states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, the respective Office for the Protection of the Constitution assesses the country as definitively right-wing extremist. She is listed nationally and in the state of Brandenburg as a suspected right-wing extremist case. The party is taking legal action against the classification. (no)
