Apple wants to get involved in the self-driving car market – and thereby compete with Tesla. The American company’s original goal was to produce an autonomous car without a steering wheel. But nothing has come of that so far. The market introduction will also be further postponed.
As Bloomberg reports, citing insiders, Apple has partially abandoned its self-driving car project. Instead, the company plans to launch just one electric car, according to the report. This vehicle is intended to offer limited autonomy features – similar to that of a Tesla. The Apple car is expected to come onto the market in 2028 at the earliest.
Pressure on Apple boss and big doubts
According to the report, the Apple car should be able to drive independently on streets and highways, but at the same time require the driver’s attention. It must also be possible to update the software so that the vehicle complies with international regulations.
Explosive: The board is said to have put pressure on Apple CEO Tim Cook (63) to either present a plan for the delivery of the project called ‘Titan’ or to stop the project. There is no usable prototype yet, the report continues.
Also problematic: according to Bloomberg, some employees are already skeptical of the project. The question is how innovative the Apple car will ultimately be. (ter/madam)
