Fight for land and influence: At least 229 people killed in Sudan Giorgia Meloni sworn in as Italy’s new head of government

Violent clashes continue to break out in Sudan.
At least 229 people have been killed in massive battles for land and political dominance in a province in southeastern Sudan.

Moreover, as violence flared up again mid-week about 10,000 people have been displaced from their homes in the Blue Nile provincesaid the director-general of the regional health ministry, Fateh al-Rahman Abdullah of the German news agency on Saturday evening. The number of victims is probably even higher. The provincial government has declared a state of emergency and banned gatherings. Troops were sent from the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

Eyewitnesses reported burning houses and murders with axes and sticks. The conflict in the Blue Nile province had already started in July: the Hausa ethnic group claims to own land in the region, deriving a political say in the system of the traditional Sudanese authorities. This is disputed by the Funj and Qumuz ethnic groups. The province, which borders Ethiopia and South Sudan, is home to more than eight different ethnic groups.

Three years after the end of the long reign of ruler Omar al-Bashir, Sudan is still a fragile state with a population of nearly 45 million. Armed conflicts between different ethnic groups are recurring. (sda/dpa)
