Suddenly, a fireball appeared in the Berlin night sky on Sunday evening. The asteroid hurtled towards Earth, leaving a long trail of light behind it. He was also reportedly seen in Prague.

It is not yet known where exactly the asteroid hit. According to a report from Spiegel, the incoming boulder was only discovered a few hours before the celestial spectacle. Its entry into the Earth’s atmosphere was immediately calculated. According to the American space agency NASA, the bomb probably hit near Nennhausen, west of Berlin.

One meter in diameter

The size of the asteroid is given as a diameter of about one meter. Most of it probably burned up as it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Numerous eyewitnesses published videos of the glowing celestial body on social media. Scientist Michael Aye, who lives in Berlin, is one of them. “Thanks to my colleagues at Allplanets, I knew when and where to look,” he writes about his video on X.

Collector paid family 400,000 for meteorite

Asteroids are large cosmic bodies that leave craters on Earth when they impact. Meteorites are fragments of cosmic bodies that slow down as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere and fall to the Earth’s surface.

Last April, a meteorite caused a stir in Germany. The 3.5 kilo fragment from the prehistory of the solar system fell 4.5 billion years ago in the garden of a family in Elmshorn, Schleswig-Holstein. A collector then bought the stone for 400,000 euros. (no)
