During an anti-Israel protest in Italy, there were sometimes serious clashes between police and demonstrators. As Italian news agency Ansa reported, some protesters and police were injured in the chaotic scenes in the northern Italian city of Vicenza on Saturday. The demonstrators threw fireworks and smoke bombs at police and used plastic batons. Emergency services responded using water cannons.
Several left-wing associations had previously called for protests against the presence of Israeli exhibitors at a jewelry and gemstone fair in Vicenza. About 500 people gathered in front of the exhibition center in the morning with large posters and banners reading “Free Palestine” or “We block Israel.” When they tried to gain access to the fairgrounds, police stopped the protest.
According to the website, two Israeli exhibitors are represented at the “VicenzaOro” trade fair. In a video from a left-wing association that took part in the protest, exhibitors from Israel said it was an unacceptable presence that had to be decisively opposed. According to media reports, another protest is planned for the afternoon near the exhibition center. (sda/dpa)
