Thirteen children died in a fire at a school in China. The fire broke out on Friday evening at a school in central China’s Henan province, state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday.

Accordingly, firefighters were alerted late in the evening to a fire in a dormitory of Yingcai School in Yanshanpu village, not far from the megacity of Nanyang. “Rescuers arrived quickly and the flames were extinguished at 11:38 p.m.,” Xinhua reported.

Children were nine to ten years old

In addition to the fatalities, a child was also injured in the fire. He is being treated in a hospital and his condition is “stable”. Citing a teacher, the Hebai Daily newspaper reported that all the victims were in the same third grade and were nine or 10 years old.

Authorities began an investigation into the cause of the fire. At least one person linked to the school was arrested, Xinhua reported.

Users in online networks expressed their horror at the fire on Saturday. “It’s too frightening, 13 children from 13 families all disappeared in one fell swoop (…), if there is no strict punishment, their souls will not rest in peace,” a user wrote on the online platform Weibo. (AFP)
