A refugee boat that probably sailed from Libya to Europe last week with about forty people on board is missing in the Mediterranean Sea. According to information from the Italian coast guard on Tuesday evening, the search has so far been without success. The wooden boat was last seen off the coast of the island of Malta on Friday from an aircraft belonging to the EU border protection agency Frontex. In addition to Coast Guard ships and aircraft, merchant ships traveling in the area have also participated in the search in recent days.
According to aid organizations, between 35 and 46 people left for Europe by boat. The destination of the trip was the Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the junctions in the migration from Africa to Europe. However, according to the helpers, the boat never arrived there. It is feared that it has suffered distress and sunk.
Fatal accidents happen again and again on the flight routes across the Mediterranean. There are people in the boats who are fleeing war, conflict and desolate living conditions from their home countries in the hope of a better life. They pay a lot of money for the crossing in often overcrowded and barely seaworthy boats. (sda/dpa)
