It is July 11, 2012. Then 16-year-old Jude Maboné (now 28) wanted to run a 10 kilometer run on that fateful day. While running, the teen suddenly feels pain in her chest and can barely breathe. She feels nauseous and dizzy. She makes her way to the hospital.

Then she finds out: it was a heart attack. Over the next two years, five more heart attacks would occur, all of which occurred while jogging. The young woman spoke to CNN about her story.

To this day, doctors still puzzle over the cause of heart attacks. According to the doctors, her heart was completely healthy. There were no previous illnesses and the sporty teenager always ate healthy. The specialists explained to the completely bewildered teenager that her illness was hormonal and that she would ‘outgrow it’ – and that’s what happened. Jude survived the terrible time mainly thanks to the loving support of her family.

Jude Maboné took part in the Miss America pageant

She took beta blockers to control her blood pressure, avoided stress and largely avoided competitive sports. Her health problems have never stopped Jude from her dream of becoming a beauty queen.

She succeeded in this last year. She was crowned Miss District of Columbia on her eighth attempt. The ambitious young woman took part in the Miss America pageant, but could not win.

What makes Maboné’s story even more remarkable: women under the age of 65 have a higher risk of dying from a heart attack than men.

Even though she failed in the Miss America pageant, Jude is a well-known face in her state. She wants to draw attention to heart disease without a specific cause. To this end, she works closely with the American Heart Association and aims to create new awareness about heart health, for example by advocating preventive screenings or the use of defibrillators in schools.
