Town in Iceland’s volcanic area must be evacuated again. Winter storm in Iowa disrupts Republican election campaign

The volcanic eruption-hit town of Grindavík on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula must be evacuated again. The responsible authorities on Saturday ordered the renewed evacuation of the city of 4,000 inhabitants, according to a statement from the Civil Protection Authority, based on a risk assessment by the National Weather Agency.

Everyone must leave Grindavík on Monday evening, from then on it is forbidden to stay there. The place is still classified as dangerous after the November earthquakes and there is also an increased risk of eruptions.

A few days before Christmas, a volcanic eruption occurred north of Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the fourth in three years. Grindavík had already been evacuated in advance, while the new eruption was heralded by a series of earthquakes lasting a week.

The earthquakes caused extensive damage in the area, including deep cracks in the streets. According to reports in the Icelandic media, a worker fell into one of these crevices a few days ago; the search for him has since been halted without him being found.
