A Danish family was seriously injured in a tragic gondola accident in Tyrol.

A tragic gondola accident occurred in Tyrol on Tuesday. In the Hochoetz ski area, a tree hit the cabin, causing the gondola to fall about ten meters.

According to Oe24, the cable car authority’s investigation has now been completed. The reason for the crash was a “sequence of several adverse natural conditions”, the mountain railways said. Work will resume on Friday. “All inspections of the cable car system necessary for safe operation, as well as further measures along the route” have been carried out.

Son had to go back to intensive care

Although the four prisoners – a Danish family – were lucky to survive, their relatives cannot breathe a sigh of relief. The father (49), his brother (46), his son (20) and his daughter (19) are in hospital with serious injuries.

On social media, Patricia T., the mother of the two young people, gives an insight into how her family is actually doing. What she has to say is very shocking.

Her ex-husband was hit hardest. “He has two punctured lungs, nine broken ribs and both kidneys are damaged,” said the woman from Herning, Denmark. He was put into an induced coma. His condition is stable.

While father and daughter are in hospital in Innsbruck, the uncle and son are in hospital in Zams. T. now takes turns visiting the victims in the hospitals. Her 19-year-old daughter Sofia “had surgery on the bones behind her eye” and was released from the hospital on January 15. Considering the circumstances, she is doing well, she writes on Instagram. She is “really overwhelmed and affected by the accident” but is currently focusing on her father, uncle and brother Daniel.

Mother and daughter are especially concerned about their brother. As T. reveals, Daniel was again transferred to the intensive care unit in Zams. The 20-year-old suffered a severe concussion and local bleeding in the brain. There were also four fractures to the back and two under the right eye. The uncle’s condition is also precarious. His lungs have been ‘punctured’ since the gondola accident. He also has a broken arm, five fractures to his back and two broken ribs.

Neither human nor technical failure

Forest inspectors, geologists and other experts examined the accident site at the Hochoetz mountain railway. A total of three fallen trees were responsible for the crash. A 28-meter-tall tree fell towards the cable car route along with a smaller tree, taking a third tree with it. “The trees that fell were not so-called edge trees that were directly next to the cable car route, but more than twenty meters away from the route,” said a statement.

But why did the trees fall? The explanation given is a “relatively small root system with little penetration depth”. Moreover, the trees were on “rocky ground that was not very fissured.” The crash ultimately occurred due to “possible dragging of the trees along the rope.” One of the trees hit the anchorage of the gondola, which broke free from the rope and plunged into the depths.
