The aim is to strengthen energy independence and achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets. In addition to the possible construction of a new nuclear power plant, London wants to invest in modern nuclear fuel and focus on ‘smarter regulations’. All told, nuclear energy production is expected to quadruple to 24 gigawatts by 2050. This is expected to cover a quarter of the UK’s electricity needs.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said nuclear power is the “perfect antidote” to the country’s energy problems. “It is green, cheaper in the long term and will ensure UK energy security.” Energy Minister Claire Coutinho said Britain never wants to depend on “tyrants” like Russian President Vladimir Putin for energy again.
Britain currently has nine operational nuclear reactors, but many are old and nearing the end of their lives. A new nuclear power plant, Hinkley Point C, is already being built in the country. Construction of another nuclear power plant, Sizewell C, is expected to begin this year. The additional nuclear power plant now being considered by the government should be of comparable size to these two projects.
