The strike by the train drivers’ union GDL in the freight transport of Deutsche Bahn has started. As a spokesperson for the state-owned company confirmed on Tuesday evening, the first operators stopped work at 6 p.m., regardless of an outstanding court ruling.
At that time, the regional labor court in Frankfurt heard about an urgent request from the railways, which wanted to stop the strike with a preliminary injunction.
According to union plans, the passenger transport strike will start at 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The end of the strike will be announced on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
The railways and the GDL have been negotiating new collective labor agreements since the beginning of November. The conflict has escalated in a very short time. After just two rounds of negotiations, GDL boss Claus Weselsky declared that the talks had failed.
The main sticking point is the GDL’s demand for a reduction in weekly working hours with full wage compensation. Deutsche Bahn has so far rigorously rejected this and is only willing to negotiate an adjustment to the election models. (sda/dpa)
