Suddenly, Romiou Shaikh (36) suffered from shortness of breath, a strange feeling in his chest and felt weak. And always when he used to stand in the kitchen of his own restaurant.
In 2014, he opened the “Avantgarde” near Hamburg together with his brother Fabian Shaikh (26). The big dream of the brothers and sisters. Her father was already in the kitchen. And Romiou Shaikh was happy to help. Cooking became his passion, his calling. “I am the heart of the kitchen. “I create and decorate every day,” he tells “Bild”.
Medication helps, but is not a solution
But now this lifelong dream is history. The chef has developed an allergy. His body reacts with an immune response to various fumes that arise in the kitchen, such as grill and frying smoke. This means: Romiou Shaikh can no longer cook for his guests. The 36-year-old was able to combat the allergic complaints with medication. But that is not a solution for him. The result: the restaurant has to close at the end of January.
Fabian Shaikh leading the “Avantgarde” alone, without his brother, was not an option. “Our father gave us solidarity in our cradle. “I always stand by his side and support his decision,” Fabian Shaikh told “Bild”. The siblings want to continue working together in the future and already have an idea. But they don’t want to say what exactly it is about.
Romiou Shaikh has no problems with his allergies at home: “My mother cooks at home. Only she is allowed in the kitchen. That is our great happiness.” (ymh)
