During the ongoing government talks, Italian head of state Sergio Mattarella has appointed the head of far-right Fratelli d’Italia, Giorgia Meloni, to his office.
The 45-year-old is expected at the Quirinal Palace in Rome on Friday afternoon at 4.30 pm, according to a statement. Meloni was with former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of the conservative Forza Italia and the party leader of the right-wing Lega, Matteo Salvini, in Mattarella in the morning. There, the right-wing party alliance proposed Meloni as prime minister of an upcoming government.
Mattarella could therefore order Meloni in the afternoon to form a government. After that, she would have to submit a cabinet draft to him. If the 81-year-old accepts this, Melonis and her cabinet – possibly this weekend – will be sworn in. (sda/dpa)
