A crime boss is being sought in Ecuador probably escaped from prison is. An investigation is underway into the alleged escape of Adolfo Macías, known as ‘Fito’, as the public prosecutor’s office in the South American country announced on Sunday evening (local time). Macías is the leader of the important criminal group “Los Choneros”.

According to media reports, he was expected to be transferred from prison in Guayaquil to another detention center on Sunday morning. He could not be found where he should have beenpolice chief César Zapata told reporters. Initially, a large contingent of police and army searched for Macías in prison, the TV channel Ecuavisa reported.

The “Choneros” are fighting with other criminal groups in Ecuador Control over drug smuggling routes towards the north. Violence in Ecuador has increased dramatically in recent years. With around 25 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest rates in Latin America was recorded in 2022. Many of the overcrowded prisons are controlled by criminal organizations and fights between gangs often take place. (sda/dpa)
