On December 26 last year, a serious accident almost occurred while hiking through the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York State. Hope Lloyd, 46, slips and falls on the slopes of South Dix Mountain.
The woman slides several meters down a slope. Shortly before a rocky cliff, Lloyd grabs a protruding branch and clings to it to avoid falling into the depths. ‘That’s the only thing that saved me. If I had been a little left or a little right, I wouldn’t be here now,” she said in an interview with AP.
Lloyd suffers scratches and is confronted with an almost hopeless situation. Authorities later described it as if the 46-year-old miraculously managed to get her cell phone. She warns the rescuers, but it soon becomes clear: the rescuers will need several hours to get to her.
25 hours later she is back at the car
Lloyd clings to the trunk for about eight hours. She moves her body every now and then to avoid freezing in the cold. The weather is getting worse by the minute. “We were traveling in conditions we would otherwise never be in,” rescuer Andrew Lewis told Lake Placid News. “It felt like we were walking through a car wash, we were so wet.”
It wasn’t until around 1:30 am that rescuers reached Hope Lloyd and managed to free the woman from her predicament. They give her food and drink and dry clothes and then go back. At 6:20 a.m., about 25 hours after she started her walk, Hope Lloyd is back at her car.
The woman describes herself as an experienced hiker, has been through the state’s mountains several times and knows the area. This time she was extremely lucky to be alive. “I’m just grateful to be alive,” the woman said. “I just want to hug everyone.” (zis)
