Two people crashed their car into Lake Como in northern Italy and died. The 45-year-old woman and the 38-year-old man could only be pulled dead from the water near the city of Como on Sunday, police said. Initial investigations indicate they were sitting in their car at a lakeside lookout in a parking lot on Saturday evening. According to reports from an eyewitness, the SUV suddenly started moving, broke through a barrier and fell about thirty feet into the water. The background was initially unclear.
Lake Como is one of the most popular lakes in the region, also among holidaymakers from Germany. According to initial information, the two fatalities are Italians. At the time of the fall, there were strong gusts of wind at the accident site. Rescuers began searching for the car’s occupants that night, but had to call off the operation. Divers recovered the two bodies this morning. (sda/dpa)
