An Alaska Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing at the airport in the American city of Portland on Friday evening local time. According to reports from passengers, a large part of the plane was torn away in mid-air shortly after takeoff.
Stunning photos and dramatic video footage posted by passengers on social media show the extent of the plane’s destruction.
Only put into use two months ago
Alaska Airlines announced on X that it was aware of an “incident” on board flight AS1282. Further information will follow as it becomes available. As the airline explained to news channel KPTV, there were 174 passengers and six crew members on board the plane.
The Boeing 737-9 Max, which only entered service two months ago, was en route from Portland to Ontario. A passenger tells the TV channel that a child had to be held in his seat by his mother because of the pressure drop. Some passengers also lost their mobile phones, which were sucked out of the plane.
The child closest to the damaged part of the plane lost his shirt due to loss of pressure. Official information on personal injuries is not yet available. However, according to eyewitnesses, no one was injured. (no)
