Working too much?: Authorities take triplets from Austrian star lawyer

Single mother: lawyer Liane Hirschbrich.

Caroline, Sarah and Christian were born on October 8. The triplets were two months premature. That is why they were initially cared for in a Viennese hospital. Her mother, the famous Austrian lawyer Liane Hirschbrich, was finally able to take the last little ones home with her on December 20.

But the next day – just before Christmas – the Youth Care office showed up at the door. The social workers showed up flanked by police officers, Hirschbrich said. Without ever checking her apartment or checking her living conditions, they “took” the triplets from her. The babies were placed separately with foster parents.

Go public

The story has now taken a happy turn, the Kronen Zeitung reports. But Hirschbrich had to fight hard for the children.

The lawyer decided to make the case public. The Kronen Zeitung then published a video of the authorities’ operation in Hirschbrich’s apartment. You will see an employee of the Youth Care Office explain the procedure and take the children with you. The social worker says one of the babies wet the diaper. When asked if she wants to pack it herself, Hirschbrich says no. She prefers to film everything.

On December 29, the lawyer was able to see her triplets again for the first time at the youth care office. At this appointment she noticed that they were not feeling well. “I demanded a guarantee that they would not suffer any damage in their new home,” says the lawyer. The triplets were then returned to hospital.

Redemptive court ruling

A court ruling ultimately provided a happy ending: custody of Caroline, Sarah and Christian would be revoked from the child welfare agency and given solely to the child’s mother, according to an email Wednesday. Hirschbrich went to the hospital that same day and retrieved her babies.

The court letter also states the reasons why the Youth Care Office became active in the first place. Employees at the Vienna hospital therefore feared that the working single mother would be overwhelmed by caring for the triplets.

The lawyer remembers: She only had two hands, but three children, she was told in the hospital. The staff did not believe she could adequately care for the triplets. That’s why you have to warn youth care, they said.

Hirschbrich responds that she has of course taken precautions to ensure optimal care for the babies. For example, thanks to the support of her mother, a retired doctor and an au pair. “And I had already significantly reduced my working hours.”

After the happy ending, the star lawyer thanks the people who have encouraged her in “numerous letters” in recent weeks. “I am sure that without reporting about my drama I would have been separated from my triplets for even longer,” Hirschbrich is also convinced. (no)
