“They think they can do it”: Skiers have an accident on a closed valley run

Some skiers lose their balance and run into the valley.

Faster and faster he slides uncontrollably on his back over the icy surface: Screaming in panic, a skier races down the valley run in the Zillertal Arena into the valley, causing other winter sports enthusiasts to almost fall.

A January 3 video shared on Tiktok is currently going viral. It shows how some skiers do not let the closure of the valley run stop them and still try to get down the slopes somehow. The wisest people take off their skis and descend on foot – others try to maneuver across the ice surface with the boards under their feet.

According to Franz Kranebitter, the slope in question had not been open all winter, he told the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”. The access roads to runway number 10 are cordoned off with nets. Yet there are always skiers who ignore this barrier. Kranebitter: “Some people see snow and think they can do it.”

Now rescuers must be positioned

The valley descent is very steep, especially in the lower area, and even under good conditions it is only suitable for good skiers. Despite the incurability: So far no serious accident has occurred that would have required a helicopter mission, Kranebitter told the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”.

However, he is critical of skiers who ignore the ban: “We do our utmost to offer our guests a safe skiing experience on well-prepared slopes.” Now they want to place extra lifeguards at the barrier nets to prevent daredevils from falling down there. But the cable car boss also knows: “If someone knows a secret route, you cannot prevent him or her from descending.”
