A defendant physically assaulted the sitting judge yesterday during a court hearing in Clark County, Nevada. Surveillance footage shows 30-year-old Deobra Delone Redden suddenly jumping over the bench and lunging at Judge Mary Kay Holthus. The ‘irony’ of it all: Redden was on trial for assault.
Bailiffs and other officers were able to overpower the attacker after a scuffle.
Trigger warning: The following video shows the violent confrontation.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas. Redden was wrestled to the ground behind the judge’s bench by several court and jail officials and courtroom staff. The video also shows some of them throwing punches at the inmate Redden.
Holthus was thrown from her chair into a wall by the surprise jumping attack and suffered some injuries but was not taken to hospital, the court was told.
However, one of the bailiffs who came to the judge’s aid had to be taken to hospital to be treated for a bleeding wound on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder, officials and witnesses said.
Accused of assault with a baseball bat
“It happened so quickly that you didn’t know what to do,” said Richard Scow, the lead prosecutor who tried Redden for allegedly attacking someone with a baseball bat last year.
The suspect had asked the judge for leniency before his attack. He described himself as someone who never stops doing what is right, no matter how difficult it is. “I’m not a rebellious person,” he said, later adding that he didn’t think he should go to prison. “But if it’s right for you, then you have to do what you have to do.”
When the judge made it clear that she intended to put him behind bars and the bailiff wanted to handcuff him, Redden shouted profanities and stormed forward, amid the screams of people who had been sitting in the courtroom with Redden.
More charges will follow
Redden was arrested at the scene and held at the Clark County Detention Center, where he faces several new charges, including assault on a protected person, meaning the judge and court officials. (lso)
