At least two members of pro-Iranian militias have been killed in a US airstrike in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, according to security circles. The German news agency learned from security circles on Thursday that the US attack hit a facility belonging to the so-called Popular Mobilization Forces in the east of the city.

Internet propaganda outlets close to the pro-Iranian militias reported the assassination of two high-ranking leaders. A video was also published there, reportedly showing a cloud of smoke over the alleged site of the attack.

Tense situation in Iraq

There was initially no acknowledgment of the attack, nor any official confirmation. Iraqi news site Al-Sumaria and television station Al-Majadin also reported an explosion and an attack on a Popular Mobilization Forces facility.

The situation in Iraq, as in the entire Middle East region, is very tense as a result of the Gaza war and deadly escalations in Lebanon and Iran, among others. The pro-Iranian militias have great influence in Iraq and Syria. They have carried out more than 100 attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria since the Gaza war began three months ago. (SDA)
