Australian media wrote this on Thursday, citing local rangers. The child required medical attention but was not seriously injured. Authorities are now searching for the dingo, 9News reported. K’gari is the world’s largest sand island and popular with tourists from all over the world.
Last July, a jogger was attacked and seriously injured by a pack of dingoes. The woman suffered bite wounds to her torso and legs and was flown by helicopter to Hervey Bay on the mainland. The pack leader was later euthanized.
Dingoes are dog-like predators that live mainly in Australia. Dingo attacks on humans have increased recently. Also last year, a ten-year-old child was bitten by a dingo and dragged underwater. The boy was saved by his sister. In April, one of the animals bit the head of a six-year-old girl who was playing in shallow water.
Queensland authorities estimate there are between 25 and 30 packs of dingoes on the island, each with between three and 12 members. The animals that do not bark but howl like wolves are protected on K’gari. (SDA)
