Hundreds of pages of unsealed documents from a legal battle involving sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were released in the United States on Wednesday. The documents are expected to contain nearly 200 names, including some of Epstein’s accusers, prominent businessmen and politicians.
Many of the people whose names appear in the documents released Wednesday have not been accused of wrongdoing or have previously been named in lawsuits or news reports. The documents published on Wednesday are not a “client list” of Epstein.
Some of the names of the victims are known, including those of friends and acquaintances who had contact with the sex offender. This also applies to Prince Andrew, one of King Charles III’s brothers. But he is not the only public figure alleged to have collaborated with Epstein and his partner Gishlane Maxwell.
Bill Clinton mentioned in files
Former US President Clinton, formerly known as ‘Doe 36’, is also said to be mentioned in the court documents. When reached for comment before publication, his representatives referred to a statement he made in 2019 in which Clinton said he knew “nothing” about Epstein’s crimes. According to the media, Clinton had no objection to his name being used.
According to the BBC, the files also contain notes about Johanna Sjoberg, who accused Prince Andrew of touching her breast.
According to the BBC, Sjoberg also testified that Epstein once told her that former US President Bill Clinton “liked her young” – allegedly referring to girls. Clinton had an affair with a 22-year-old White House intern when he was US president.
The files also include Maxwell’s statement, which said Clinton traveled aboard Epstein’s private jet but did not specify how often.
Clinton traveled on Epstein’s plane on humanitarian trips to Africa in the early 2000s and praised Epstein as a committed philanthropist at the time, but later said he had cut ties with him.
Stopover with Trump
According to the American broadcaster CNN, the documents show that Epstein told her that he would contact Donald Trump on the way to one of his casinos in New Jersey.
“Jeffrey said, ‘Great, we’ll call Trump,’” she testified after the pilots said their plane could not land in New York and would have to stop in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The documents contain no evidence of Trump’s wrongdoing. Ms. Sjoberg was asked if she had ever given Mr. Trump a massage, and she replied, “No.”
A person should not be made public in the first instance’
In December, a New York court ruled that a list of Epstein’s alleged victims and accomplices could be made public. Judge Loretta Preska justified this move by saying that many names were already circulating in the media. In total, more than 150 people are said to be listed in the document. A person named “Doe 107” asked the court not to be identified; the request was granted because it could pose a threat.
The list will be published as part of a civil lawsuit that Virginia Giuffre, a victim of the abuse ring, has filed against Epstein’s partner Ghislaine Maxwell. Epstein died by suicide in prison while awaiting trial. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2021 for various sex crimes.
