Storm “Henk” is currently hitting Britain, causing flooding and falling trees. The city of Birmingham was also affected, where a heroic rescue caused a stir.
Liam Stych, who was walking with his pregnant girlfriend, rescued a mother and her three-year-old daughter from a flooded car. He reports on the rescue operation for the Daily Mail.
“It was just scary”
“We were walking over a bridge and I heard a woman screaming from a car. She screamed, “Help me, help me, please save my baby, he’s in the back!” The front of her car was pointing down into the water, so I dangled myself off the bridge to make sure the car wouldn’t drive through. to tax it if it were to sink,” says Stych.
A video shows the heroic action. In it you see how the father of two children climbs down and breaks the window of the Fiat Punto. Then, as he explains, he tied the car to the bridge railing with straps to prevent the vehicle from sinking further. “Otherwise the car would have been swept away by the current. “It was just scary,” his partner told the BBC.
Because the mother could only open her window halfway, he first rescued the little girl and threw her to his friend Tia Draper, who was standing on the bridge filming the incident. After saving the toddler, he also brought his mother to safety. “I told her to climb into the backseat and come out the window.”
More than 300 flood warnings
The operation was successful and the mother was rescued from the car with Stych’s help. Although West Midlands Police described the man as a ‘local hero’, the rescuer was modest and said he had only acted on ‘instinct’.
According to the report, the road engineer and traffic manager’s main concern is that people understand the deadly danger of flooding. “It was pure luck that we were there when it happened.”
The storm “Henk” has already claimed its first fatality. A man was killed by a tree in Gloucestershire on Tuesday. In addition, more than 300 flood warnings were issued on Wednesday and tens of thousands of households were without power. (dzc)
