Police officers searched the apartment and workplace of the arrested attacker in the city of Asan, south of Seoul, on Wednesday, South Korean broadcasters reported. The 66 or 67-year-old man injured the left-liberal politician with a knife on Tuesday during a public appearance in the southeastern port city of Busan. The police are investigating the suspect for attempted murder.
Police hope the search will yield more information about the motive for the crime. According to reports, the attacker ran a real estate agency in Asan. Initial investigations revealed that he had also been to Busan’s neighboring city of Ulsan, which was also on Lee’s visit schedule, the day before the crime. The attacker was overpowered on the spot. He had previously posed as a supporter of the head of the Democratic Party.
The opposition politician was taken to a hospital in Seoul on Tuesday and underwent surgery. Those close to his party said the 59-year-old had regained consciousness after surgery and was recovering. Lee was a candidate in the presidential elections two years ago. He narrowly lost the elections to current right-wing conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol. The attack took place three months before South Korea’s general election. (SDA)
