Iran’s judiciary has executed five people for aggravated robbery. As justice portal Misan reported on Monday, the convicts were charged, among other things, with armed robbery and gang-related crimes. The death sentences were carried out in Karaj, near the capital Tehran. The identities of the people were not disclosed.
Human rights activists have criticized the practice of the death penalty in Iran for decades. According to their findings, the Islamic Republic’s judiciary executed significantly more people last year than in previous years. There are no official figures on executions. According to an annual report by the human rights organization HRANA, at least around 750 people were executed in 2023. (sda/dpa)
