An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck the Japanese main island of Honshu on Monday around 4:10 PM (local time, 8:10 AM CET). The epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Shika, on the northern coast of the country.
The National Meteorological Agency then warned of a three-meter high tsunami along the coast of the Sea of Japan. A spokeswoman for the Japanese television channel NHK continually and urgently urged residents to seek safety on higher ground. “All residents should immediately move to higher ground,” she said.
Buildings in the area around the capital Tokyo also started swaying. Initially there were no reports of damage or injuries. Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. (madam/SDA)
