The first 700 New Zealanders can slide immediately

The Chatham Islands, part of New Zealand, are just 15 minutes after Kiribati. They are located about 800 kilometers east of New Zealand and have their own time zone: two of the ten islands of the archipelago have only about 700 inhabitants.

New Zealand and the island states of Samoa and Tonga will start in 2024 one hour after Kiritimati.

American Samoa, located just 140 miles east of Samoa on the other side of the International Date Line, will be the last country to pass in 2024 – 12 hours after Switzerland.

Kiribati celebrates the new year

While it is still a few hours until midnight in Switzerland, the Pacific Islands are already celebrating the New Year. Kiribati will be the first to ring in the year 2024.

The island republic of Kiribati, which has multiple time zones, stretches along the equator in the middle of the South Pacific. The first atoll, which will be there in 2024, is Kiritimati with its 7,300 inhabitants.

Australia and New Zealand are also preparing to pop the corks.
