That he survived this accident can be called a miracle: Matthew Reum (27) fell off a bridge in Indiana with his pickup truck on December 20. The airbag deployed and Reum was trapped in the car. It took six days for the young man to be found. He only survived thanks to the rain, Indiana State Police wrote in a statement.
According to police, the car left the road for unknown reasons. The pickup overturned several times and fell off the bridge into a stream. The crashed car could not be seen from the street. Reum was trapped because the car was badly crushed. Rheumatism could not move; he couldn’t even reach his cell phone to tell someone he had been in an accident. He screamed for help in vain – no one heard him.
On December 26, two men happened to pass the accident site. “Curious, they went to the vehicle and saw that a lifeless person was inside,” police wrote in their report. “However, when one of the fishermen touched the occupant, he turned his head and started talking to them.” One of the men who found Reum was Mario Garcia. “It was a huge shock,” he told television station “WTHR.” And: “It seemed as if he had really been fighting for his life for days.”
Survived by drinking rainwater
If it hadn’t rained these days, Reum would be dead by now. After just three days without water, a human’s chances of survival are slim. But the American was lucky and drank rainwater for six days. After Reum was found by the fishermen, he was taken to hospital. He suffered several broken bones and his lower left leg had to be amputated because it was stuck for days.
Reum’s best friend Haley Traxler is collecting donations through the crowdfunding platform “Gofundme” because the accident victim faces a large hospital bill once he is released. “He is the nicest person I have ever met,” Traxler wrote. The fundraising goal of 25,000 has now been exceeded by $15,000. Reum is incredibly grateful and says, “No matter how hard things get, there is light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes in the least expected way.”
