This couple is constantly on vacation: John (76) and Melody Hennessee (64) from Florida decided to take a radical step three years ago.
They sold virtually all their belongings, including their home and business. However, they did not invest the money they earned in shares or real estate, but in an endless journey around the world.
Semi-detached camper for cruise ship
For this purpose, the Hennessees first bought a camper with which they wanted to drive to the most remote corners of the United States. But they soon had enough of the driving and quickly reversed the program.
When John Hennessee came across a Facebook ad one day promoting a 274-day cruise, the penny finally dropped for him and his wife. Instead of racing around the world on four wheels, the Hennessees wanted to travel the world on a huge holiday tanker.
The couple has already been through a lot. The Hennessees have already been able to travel through Australia, New Zealand and a few other destinations on their travel list. They are currently sunbathing on the beaches of the Dominican Republic, Sky News reports.
“We are sure that a cruise is cheaper”
Life on the high seas also seems to have been a windfall for the couple’s bank account. “We now have a phone bill, a shipping bill and a few credit card bills when we go ashore, but that’s about it,” John Hennessee told Sky News.
Even otherwise, the Hennessees would have far less expenses than they did three years ago. “We no longer have a mortgage and no costs for a house. We no longer have car insurance, property insurance or utility bills.”
John Hennessee is convinced that their expenses today are only half what they were when they lived on the land. “We are sure that a cruise is cheaper.”
Currently, the couple’s life is planned in monthly phases as they move from one ship to another. But that will be over soon. In the future they will settle permanently on the luxury steamship “Villa Vie”.
Want to stay on the ship for at least 15 years
Once built, the ship will sail around the world every three years, especially in warm weather. To finance this adventure, the Hennessees are apparently willing to pay a lot.
An inside cabin on the residential cruise ship would cost as much as $99,000. A balcony villa with an ocean view costs $249,000. To do this, residents will be charged a monthly fee of $8,000.
Because the steamboat is currently still under construction, the Hennessees have not yet been able to set foot in their new home. With the help of digital projections, they already know what their future four walls will look like.
«We wanted to buy a cabin so that we could design it according to our ideas. It will be our home, probably for at least 15 years on the ship,” says Melody Hennessee. The retired couple is optimistic about medical care, which is of course limited on the high seas.
All food makes them anxious
However, there is something that worries them a little: the amount of food usually served on cruises. The couple wanted to walk on the ship as much as possible and remain active at all times.
Because “Villa Vie” always has a few cabins available for the residents’ relatives, the Hennessees are not concerned about the possibility of losing contact with their two adult children.
Melody Hennessee does not believe for a second that they could be bored on the ship. “We’re just merpeople. We are both water sports enthusiasts and enjoy being at sea.”
Marty and Jess Ansen also had the same idea as the Hennessees. The couple from Australia have been at sea for over a year and think it is cheaper to live on a cruise ship than in a retirement home. (ced)
