According to findings from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), production of highly enriched uranium has been increased in Iran. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced this to the organization’s member states on Tuesday, a spokesman in Vienna said. Production was previously scaled back in mid-2023.

Iran announced its production plans at the end of November. IAEA inspectors verified the information during visits on December 19 and 24, the IAEA said. It concerns the production facilities of Natans and Fordow. Since the end of November, about nine kilograms of uranium enriched to a purity of up to 60 percent have been produced there – compared to about three kilograms per month in previous months.

An atomic bomb requires enrichment to at least 80 percent. Iranian politicians have been emphasizing for years that they do not want to build nuclear weapons. (sda/dpa)
