Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the U.S. military has responded with precision strikes to a series of attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq. These attacks were carried out by Iranian-backed militias three American soldiers injured Austen said on Monday evening (local time) that one was serious. On instructions from US President Joe Biden, “necessary and proportionate” attacks were carried out on three bases used by these militias.

At the same time, the US Secretary of Defense warned of further attacks on US soldiers in the region. “We do not want to escalate the conflict in the region, but we are determined and ready to take further necessary measures to protect our people and facilities.”

The Iraqi government condemned the US attacks as a “clearly hostile act”. Iraqi sources said at least one soldier was killed and 18 other people were injured, a government post on X said.

There would also have been civilians among them. The attack represented an “unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty.” At the same time, the government continued to condemn the militias’ attacks on “headquarters of foreign diplomatic missions.” In any case, they are unacceptable. (yam/sda/dpa)
