After a heavy storm, 110,000 households in eastern Australia lost power. Energy supplier Energex spoke on Tuesday of “catastrophic” damage to power lines in Queensland’s capital, Brisbane, and in the Gold Coast region. The damage was “on the order of a cyclone.” For some households, restoring power will take days, Energex said.

A 59-year-old woman died when she was struck by a falling tree in the coastal area of ​​the Gold Coast. “Unfortunately, she suffered serious head injuries and died,” paramedic Jaye Newton told reporters. “We couldn’t revive her.”

Another woman was trapped in her car for more than an hour by a fallen tree, Newton said. “It looked like a disaster area, there were trees everywhere along the road.”
