This party literally fell apart. In Belgrade, Serbia, the Kartel nightclub, which was floating on a raft, partially sank into the waters of the Danube on Sunday night.
Many partygoers were unable to cross the jetty to land in time and had to make their way to shore in the cold December water. Everyone was eventually brought safely ashore in lifeboats, the Kleine Zeitung reports.
The cause of the collapse is still unclear
According to witnesses, mass panic ensued during the events. According to reports in the Serbian media, about thirty people had to be rescued from the water by emergency services. But there are no injured or missing people.
The cause of the club’s bankruptcy is still unclear. However, witnesses speak of an alleged fight between guests and security guards, which would have caused the raft to overturn.
Last New Year’s Eve, the Freestyler nightclub in Belgrade, built on stilts, had already sunk. According to Serbian media at the time, there were only a few minor injuries. The collapse occurred because the club was overcrowded. (ced)
