Alex Batty (17) speaks for the first time about his escape in an interview with the Sun. The missing teenager suddenly appeared on the streets of France after his mother Melanie, 48, kidnapped him from his grandmother’s care six years ago.

He was fed up with the hippie lifestyle he led with his mother. He walked along the foot of the Pyrenees for two days until he was picked up by a truck driver who called the police.

“She’s not very warm and open”

He said: “I had an argument with my mother and I thought I was going to leave because I can’t live with her.” Batty tells ‘Sun’, ‘She’s a good person. But she’s just not a good mother. She just isn’t doing the motherly things you should be doing. She’s not very warm and open.”

His mother is ‘anti-government’ and believes that many people are actually ‘slaves’. He has never been to school in recent years, but actually dreams of becoming a software engineer. He taught himself languages and learned mathematics and computer science from books.

Code name Zack Edwards

The young man also misses friends. He once met a girl from Spain in a cafe. Now he says he is tired of constantly moving and working for food and shelter and using his alias Zack Edwards.

Based on his experiences with his mother, he could have roughly guessed what his future would have been like. “Moving around. No friends, no social life. Work, work, work and no studying.”

He had also personally suggested to his mother that they move to England. But she was against it. “She was against the government and against vaccinations. She was afraid I would be placed in a home.”

“Don’t be too angry with me”

Alex Batty decided to run away around midnight on Monday, December 11, while his mother was sleeping in bed. He took four T-shirts, three pairs of pants, socks, trousers, a flashlight, 100 euros and a Swiss army knife. During his escape, he slept on the floor and needed grass and leaves when he had to go to the toilet. It was freezing cold and in the end he was simply exhausted when the van driver picked him up. Back in England, he hugged his grandmother and trembled, Batty told the Sun.

He left a note for his mother that said, “Hey Mom, I just wanted to tell you that I love you so much. I am very grateful for the life you have made possible for me over the past few years.

Don’t worry about yourself, I’m sure you won’t be found. Don’t worry about me either. You know I can take care of myself.
