A gust of wind caused the Christmas tree (on the right of the photo) to fall over.

The coniferous wood could not withstand a strong gust of wind on Thursday evening, reports the Belgian news agency Belga. The tree fell on three people, of whom a 63-year-old woman died a short time later in hospital from her serious injuries.

It initially remained unclear whether the enormous, festively decorated Christmas tree was poorly secured. The accident site at the Christmas market in Oudenaarde was cordoned off and investigated after the accident.

Based on an eyewitness, the VRT reports that immediately after the accident, about twenty people lifted the tree and freed two of the victims. The third person was subsequently rescued by rescuers. (SDA)
