At the age of four, little Fina had to experience more than some people experience in their entire lives. Hospital stays, multiple operations, IVs and unbearable pain characterized her past year. The reason: the girl from Cologne (D) has a rare germ in her body.
Until a few months ago, the family of four lived happily in the Niehl district of Cologne. Until suddenly everything changed. “First my husband got sick and was on a ventilator for a long time,” Fina’s mother explained to Express.de. “When he finally got better, his four-year-old daughter complained of excruciating pain in her legs.”
The girl who enjoyed cycling and roller skating suddenly couldn’t do anything anymore. After days, doctors discovered that Fina had a rare germ in her body. The germ probably entered the body through an abrasion and began to attack the cartilage of the hip joint. The doctors decided to operate on the four-year-old immediately.
Many setbacks
A few weeks later, doctors noticed that the germ had established itself. “They told us that the hip bone would continue to be destroyed,” the parents say. That’s why Fina underwent another operation. Due to the destruction of the bone, the girl is not allowed to get up because the bone would not be able to support her weight. “The thought that you have to take care of your little one from one day to the next is difficult to put into words,” the parents say in an interview with Express.de. “She was robbed of a carefree childhood.”
The family faced many problems. The rental house was not wheelchair accessible and the mother had to give up her job to care for Fina. The family also could not bear the rising costs. The psychological burden is also enormous: “We sat here with Fina and picked out her wheelchair. “That was one of the worst moments,” says the mother. “We have to deal with the situation, but we don’t understand it.”
Fundraising campaign started
The family was even happier when they were able to attend the Santa Colonia Foundation Christmas show. The aim is to provide unbureaucratic support to families and sick children. The founders of the foundation, Torben Klein (47) and his wife Nadine (36), want to help Fina live a beautiful life.
The family was overwhelmed with their sympathy for her fate. There was a check for 2,000 euros from the Santa Colonia Foundation and the carnival company “Little Meerkats” donated 1,000 euros. At the end of the evening there was another 1,300 euros in the donation box in the foyer of the show.
“Maybe there are more people who want to support the family with a small donation,” the Kleins hope. (An)
