The right-wing Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) party has submitted a bill to parliament to prevent Christmas celebrations from being renamed “winter festivals”, Adnkronos news agency reported on Wednesday. This is also intended to ensure that nativity scenes are erected. Criticism and ridicule came from the ranks of the opposition.
Right-wing senator Lavinia Mennuni has justified the bill in recent years with “unacceptable and embarrassing decisions by some school authorities”. According to the MP, the essence of the Christian Christmas is being changed out of supposed consideration for believers of other religions. She also spoke about Christmas’s special relationship with Italy’s ‘national identity’. According to their ideas, similar rules should also apply to Easter.
The Fratelli d’Italia – which emerged from the post-fascist movement – is the largest party in the right-wing three-party coalition that has ruled Italy since October last year. It was initially unknown when the bill would be debated in parliament. There was no comment from Meloni herself on Wednesday. The opposition called the plans ‘ridiculous’. Green MP Luana Zanella said: “They want to ban everything they don’t like.”
