“This has serious consequences for world trade. This has serious consequences for safety on these ships and is unacceptable,” government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said in Berlin on Wednesday. «There is freedom at sea and also on the high seas. And if that is threatened, the global community is called upon to reduce such threats,” he said.

The German Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense confirmed that the investigation into a possible participation of the Bundeswehr in the maritime security alliance forged by the US had not yet been completed. “Operation Prosperity Guardian” is intended to protect merchant ships from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who are backed by Israel’s arch-enemy Iran.

Suitable ships available

Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, the Houthis have been attacking Israel with drones and missiles and attacking ships in the Red Sea to prevent them from sailing to Israel. A container freighter from the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd was also attacked. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said it was an international challenge that required joint action.

A German Defense Ministry spokesman rejected reports that the German navy had no troops available to take part in the operation. “I can only present that as untrue,” he said, referring to the Class 124 frigates. “Two are currently ready for combat. One is in the shipyard,” he said.
